Kaduna – The federal government led by President Muhammadu Buhari should declare bandits in the northwest region as terrorists or insurgents.

El-Rufai speaking at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna on Wednesday, October 20, maintained that the declaration would allow the Nigerian military to attack and kill bandits without any major consequences, Vanguard added.
He was quoted as saying:

“We in the Kaduna State government had always urged for the declaration of bandits as insurgents and terrorists. We have written letters to the federal government since 2017 asking for this declaration because it is this declaration that will allow the Nigerian military to attack and kill these bandits without any major consequences in the international law.”
He suggested that the federal government boost the fight against insurgency and banditry by recruiting 1,000 youths each from the 774 local governments into security agencies to increase security personnel.
The governor pointed out that bandits should not be allowed to live, saying they don’t deserve mercy.
El-Rufai’s statement backs similar calls made by Kebbi state governor, the National Assembly’s to declare bandits as terrorists.
Reps back Senate, asks Buhari to declare bandits as terrorists
Recall that the decision of members of the House of Representatives during plenary on Thursday, September 30, is that bandits who operative in the northwest and northcentral should be called terrorists.
Through a voice vote, the motion was unanimously adopted after it was thrown open by the speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila.
Babajimi Benson, the chairman of the House committee on defence, moved a motion of urgent public importance to urge the chamber to back the Senate.
NANS asks Buhari to declare bandits as terrorists
Similarly, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on President Buhari to declare bandits kidnapping students in the northern part of the country as terrorists.
NANS’ national president, Sunday Asefon, made the call on behalf of the association on Sunday, August 8, in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti state.
Asefon said anyone with a propensity to kidnap and kill students in large numbers should be declared a terrorist. AdChoices
