The four-time presidential aspirant paid a visit to the elderly woman on Sunday, October 17, where he hailed her as a freedom fighter in her own right and also received blessings from her.
Speaking at Mukami’s rented home, Raila reckoned that the freedom Kenyans get to enjoy should be credited to people like Mukami who were detained alongside former first lady Mama Ngina.
“Mama here is the exemplification of the struggle of independence in our country. To our young generation today, do not take anything for granted. You need to know that the freedom we enjoy today did not just come,” he said.
Promise of a house
At the same time, the Orange supremo was touched to learn that the widow pays rent on a monthly basis in the Nairobi house in which she lives.
Raila pledged he will ensure that she will have full ownership of the house while also promising to talk the government into giving the family land in Laikipia.
“For the descendants of Mau Mau who are still landless, there is a property we have already identified in Laikipia. I will ask the government to help them but if they don’t, my government will do it,” he said.
During his visit, he also went on his knees to receive blessings from Mukami.
Mukami’s support for BBI
A year ago, Mukami threw her weight behind the now-moribund Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) which was championed by President Uhuru Kenyatta and the ODM leader.
She said she was in support of all initiatives that were geared towards bringing all Kenyans together, remembering the heroes who have fought for Kenya and programs to support businesses among people.
“God prefers a place where there is love and understanding among people. The coming together of Uhuru and Raila is good. Kenyans will do businesses peacefully,” said Mukami during last year’s Mashujaa Day.
